Learn how to use and paint 28mm frag grenades for wargaming. This guide covers assembly, painting steps, and terrain integration tips.

Quick answer

Use frag grenades as terrain scatter or ammo box filler for 28mm troops. Follow these steps to paint them quickly and integrate them naturally into your wargaming setup.

Why frag grenades work for 28mm wargaming

These 22 hand-cast resin grenades are scaled for 28mm miniatures, making them ideal for kitting up troops, filling ammo boxes, or adding base detail. They are compatible with Victoria Miniatures and popular plastic guard figures, so you can use them straight away without conversion.

Painting considerations

Resin casts may have small mold lines. A quick scrape with a hobby knife and a rinse in warm soapy water ensures paint adheres properly. Because these are small items, batch painting saves time.

Painting and using frag grenades

  1. Clean and prepare: Remove any mold lines with a hobby knife. Wash the resin grenades in warm soapy water, rinse, and let dry completely. This removes release agents so primer sticks. Skipping the wash can cause paint to peel later.
  2. Prime the grenades: Spray or brush on a matte black or dark grey primer. Hold each grenade with tweezers or stick them to double-sided tape on a painting handle. A dark base coat makes subsequent colors pop and hides missed spots. Use a primer that bonds to resin; avoid glossy primers that highlight flaws.
  3. Apply base color: Paint the body olive drab or field grey, depending on your force. Two thin coats give even coverage. Let each coat dry fully (about 15 minutes with acrylics). Thick coats obscure the grenade's texture and can pool in recesses.
  4. Add highlights and weathering: Dry-brush a lighter green or grey on raised edges to simulate wear. Optionally, apply a brown or rust wash in the crevices for a used look. A final matte varnish seals the paint. Less is more with weathering; grenades are small, so subtle effects read better.
  5. Integrate into terrain or bases: Glue painted grenades onto scenic bases, inside ammo boxes, or scatter them around objectives. Use PVA glue for temporary placement or super glue for permanent attachment. Place grenades in groups of 2-3 for a natural look; single grenades can look lost.
