Learn how to assemble and convert the Devil's Shorts Legs x5 for female miniatures. Includes prep, fitting, and basing tips for Victoria Miniatures.
Quick Answer
Clean the mold lines, dry-fit each leg pair to the torso before gluing, and use a pin vice for stable basing. These steps save you from misaligned poses and weak joints.
Why These Legs Need Extra Care
The Devil's Shorts Legs are cast in white metal, which means they arrive with fine mold lines along the seam. Skipping cleanup leaves visible ridges that ruin the paint job. Also, because these are separate legs (not a single hip piece), you must align them carefully with the torso to get a natural standing pose.
Conversion Possibilities
These legs are the same ones included in the Van Diemen's World Devils 10 Woman Squad, so they match that kit perfectly. You can swap them onto other Victoria Miniatures female torsos, but check the hip socket shape first—some older torsos have a slightly different angle. A small amount of gap-filling putty may be needed for a seamless join.
Assembly Steps
- 1. Clean the mold lines: Use a hobby knife or fine file to remove the thin flash along the inner and outer leg seams. Pay extra attention to the back of the knee and the ankle area. A visible line here will catch the light and look like a seam after painting.
- 2. Dry-fit each leg pair to the torso: Press the leg assembly against the torso without glue. Check that both feet sit flat on the base and the hips align with the torso's waist socket. Rotate the legs slightly if the pose looks unnatural. If one foot lifts off the base, shave a tiny amount from the hip contact point, not the foot.
- 3. Pin the legs to the base: Drill a 1mm hole up into one foot and into the base. Insert a paperclip pin with super glue. Repeat for the other foot if the pose allows. This prevents the model from snapping off during handling. Skip pinning only if you are mounting the model on a scenic base with deep texture that locks the feet in place.
- 4. Glue the legs to the torso: Apply a small drop of medium-viscosity super glue to both hip contact points. Press the legs onto the torso and hold for 10–15 seconds. Check the alignment from the front and side before the glue sets fully. Too much glue will squeeze out and ruin the waist detail; use a toothpick to apply a controlled amount.
- 5. Fill any gaps: After the glue dries, inspect the waist joint. If there is a visible gap, apply a tiny amount of green stuff or liquid putty with a wet brush. Smooth it flush with the surrounding surface. Let the putty cure completely before sanding—rushing this step will leave a rough texture.
