Learn how to assemble and paint Mortar Shells x6 for wargaming or dioramas. Includes step-by-step instructions and creative display tips.

Quick answer

Assemble Mortar Shells x6 by cleaning mold lines, gluing the two halves together, and painting with metallic base coats. Use them as terrain scatter, ammo piles, or diorama props for your heavy mortar crew.

Why Mortar Shells work for both wargaming and dioramas

These 28mm-scale shells are sculpted to complement the Victoria Miniatures Heavy Mortar, but they also work as standalone scatter terrain. The two variants let you vary the look of ammo piles or crate loads. Because they are separate pieces, you can place them in stacks, inside sandbags, or next to a loader figure.

Assembly and diorama steps

  1. Clean and prepare the shells: Remove each shell from the sprue and carefully scrape away mold lines with a hobby knife. Pay attention to the seam along the body where the two halves will join. A fine sanding stick helps smooth the surface without losing detail. Skip cleaning and the halves may not fit flush, leaving visible gaps.
  2. Glue the shell halves together: Apply a thin layer of plastic glue or super glue to one half of each shell, then press the matching half firmly. Hold for 10–15 seconds. Check that the halves align evenly; adjust before the glue sets. Repeat for all six shells. Using too much glue can squeeze out and ruin the surface texture.
  3. Prime and base coat: Spray or brush on a primer (black or dark grey works best for metallic finishes). After drying, apply a base coat of gunmetal or steel metallic paint. For a weathered look, drybrush a lighter silver over the raised edges. Skipping primer may cause paint to chip off during handling.
  4. Arrange shells in a diorama or ammo pile: Glue the finished shells onto a base or terrain piece. Stack them in pyramids, lay them in a row, or scatter them around a heavy mortar model. Add sandbags, crates, or a crew figure to create context. Avoid gluing shells directly to a figure’s hands unless you pin them; they may fall off during transport.
